What Is a Brain Arterio-Venous-Malformation?

An AVM is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels that can occur in the brain (or spinal cord). This tangle can cause bleeding which in turn can lead to a stroke or death. AVMs are considered congenital (meaning the patient is born with the lesion). They can stay dormant (cause no symptoms) until they bleed. Some AVMs may never bleed in the lifetime of the patient. They can be found before they bleed (unruptured AVM) or after bleeding has occurred (ruptured AVM)

Treatment

Treatment Options

 1) Microsurgery: Open Surgery to remove the AVM.

2) Endovascular Embolization: through a catheter placed in the groin and advanced to the brain arteries and then block the arteries that are supplying the AVM with blood. This may be done in preparation for the open surgery (1) Or as the sole treatment.

3) Stereotactic Radiosurgery: High dose focused radiation on the AVM.

The other option is no treatment and observe the patient over time. Which is the best option? Every case is different, it depends on the patient’s age and medical condition and on the AVM (size, type, and location)

Our Patient Success Stories

In October of 2012 I, Claudia K., passed out while driving to work. We found out that day that I had an arteriovenous,(AVM), a malformation in the temporal lobe of my brain which had caused me to begin having seizures. The neurosurgeon I was seeing in Springfield, MO referred me to Dr.Saleem Abdulrauf at St. Louis University Hospital. My husband and I immediately felt comfortable with Dr. Abdulrauf. He was straight-forward and compassionate. I am a nurse, my husband has no medical background at all. He spoke so we both understood. My son attended medical school at St. Louis University and also felt comfortable with Dr. Albdulrauf. January of 2013 I had surgery at St. Louis University Hospital to remove the AVM. After a couple of months of recuperation, I am back to work full time as a nurse. My family highly recommends Dr. Abdulrauf and his team. we feel blessed to have been referred to them
